The American economy is strengthening, leading to higher markets and a slightly stronger dollar. Europe too is relatively strong, the UK stock market rose significantly this week on the back of good economic figures.

Big Data and Healthcare.

Google Deepmind is a venture aimed at the UK Health service. On their website they say : “DeepMind Health aim to support clinicians by providing the technical expertise needed to build and scale technologies that help them provide the best possible care to their patients.”

I do understand the power of data and of collecting and analysing it in order to both better predict future medical needs and plan treatments and so on. The benefits could be significant, and strongly in our interest. This seems to go further than a societal, health, beneficial interest, at least on the surface. It seems to have been done without sufficient public debate, and I worry about how it may be monetised and how access to the best healthcare could be restricted in a resource constrained area.

“What was astounding to me, was the sense of entitlement that this commercial company clearly feels to access NHS patient medical records without consent and that many in the room seemed to have accepted that unquestioningly,” said Jen Persson, a co-ordinator from campaign group Defenddigitalme.

Foolish moment of the Week:

This week saw the Ig Nobel awards and this year the biology prize was awarded jointly to: “Charles Foster, for living in the wild as, at different times, a badger, an otter, a deer, a fox, and a bird; and to Thomas Thwaites, for creating prosthetic extensions of his limbs that allowed him to move in the manner of, and spend time roaming hills in the company of, goats.” Foolish though it may be at one level the research into prosthetics is extraordinarily valuable and is increasingly making a massive difference to many.
